Springcroft Primary School

Curriculum

We believe the purpose of education is to bring about goodness, enabling children to flourish socially, artistically, academically, and through sport, exercise and wellbeing.

"Leaders and governors have developed a broad and rich curriculum, which is ambitious for all pupils."

Ofsted, November 2022

Our curriculum builds upon the EYFS curriculum and the National Curriculum, and maximises cross-curricular opportunities and the fluent use of English and maths to enhance every child's progress. It complies with our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014, ensuring it's accessible to those with disabilities or special educational needs — see our Inclusion & SEND page for further detail. Parents have a right of withdrawal from all or part of RE.

Our Subject Leaders carefully craft learning experiences that map progression in both substantive and disciplinary knowledge across Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science and the Foundation Subjects. We aim for every child to think independently, appreciate the world around them, and ultimately live happy and successful lives — confident, independent and inquisitive learners who understand the world's past, present and future, and who know what they need to know and how they need to be, to succeed.

Through embedded values, we teach and role model how to be a good person, with an unwavering focus on developing children's moral, spiritual, social and cultural understanding, alongside personal attributes — resilience, empathy and integrity.

Curriculum overviews for each subject are available via the menu on the right.

Our curriculum drivers

Our three curriculum drivers work together to instil a deep love of learning that extends far beyond the classroom walls, ensuring every child leaves Springcroft ready for their next step — and with a lifelong love of learning.

Curious

Nurturing natural curiosity to ignite the spark of wonder.

Independent

Empowering children to take ownership of their learning and build confidence tackling challenges.

Prepared

Equipping pupils with the adaptive skills and resilient mindset needed for future success.

Our curriculum design

General principles

Our curriculum intent is bespoke to the needs of our children and the community we serve. We underpin its delivery by giving children the opportunity to:

Understand the purpose and value of their learning Develop and demonstrate creativity Experience challenge and enjoyment Develop rich, deep subject knowledge See clear links across learning

Beyond our core offer, we enrich the curriculum with specialist music, instrumental, PE and sports teaching, Survival School, specialist curriculum days, and visitors into school. Every class experiences memorable events in and out of school each term, supplemented by residentials — building progressively from a night camping on the school field in lower Key Stage 2, to a week's UK residential, through to a week's residential trip to Europe in upper Key Stage 2.

Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Teaching challenges children to become independent, motivated learners full of curiosity. In our fun, happy and secure environment, children experience consistent teaching, engaging hands-on learning, and a child-centred curriculum — exploring, taking risks, and forming positive relationships in a setting that celebrates every child's uniqueness.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

Our knowledge-rich curriculum is designed with progression in mind, so children build on existing skills and knowledge to know more and remember more over time.

Our curriculum is built around the objectives set out in the National Curriculum, covering the core and foundation subjects:

English Mathematics Science Computing History Geography Art & Design Design Technology Music Physical Education Spanish (MFL) PSHE RSE Religious Education

Our curriculum focuses significantly on reading, writing, speaking and listening, maths and science, which underpin all our termly themes. Foundation subjects enable children to explore content in increasing depth and complexity as they move through school. Knowledge and skills are developed through termly themes that begin with a philosophical enquiry question, allowing us to make connections across the curriculum while developing children's understanding of what makes each subject distinct and unique.

"Subject leaders have a clear understanding of what is working well in their subjects. They have thought carefully about what pupils will learn and when. From the early years through to Year 6, leaders have planned opportunities to revisit key concepts. For example, in art and design, when pupils explore collage, they apply their knowledge of techniques used by artists such as Picasso. This prompts them to use and embed what they have learned before, and to make connections with new learning. It also ensures that pupils' knowledge and skills build over time."
