HOPE Project

Springcroft Primary School

Emotional wellbeing and mental health support

All children have their ups and downs as they grow up. This page explains the support we offer, who provides it, and how to access it.

"Personal development is a strength of the school. Pupils, staff and parents can access wellbeing support through the school's bespoke emotional wellbeing provision."

Ofsted, November 2022

A note on HOPE: Springcroft's wellbeing support was previously delivered through our bespoke HOPE ("Helping Our Pupils' Emotions") project. HOPE as a named entity has now come to an end, but we remain fully committed to the same aims — the support below continues in-house, led by our Wellbeing Lead.

The kind of things we can help with

A child may need someone to talk to about emotional, behavioural or social difficulties, or just need some advice. We're here to help with things such as:

Family life School refusal Bullying Behaviour Anxiety Sadness Low self-esteem Illness Bereavement

Who provides the support

Our in-school team includes the Headteacher, SENCO, Wellbeing Lead, and our Year 6 Pupil Wellbeing Mentors. We also draw on wider support such as the School Nurse, Family Support Worker, Educational Psychologist, and Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) where needed.

How to access support

Parent or staff referral

A parent or member of staff can contact the Headteacher, SENCO or Wellbeing Lead with any concerns, who will coordinate the right support.

Listening Ear (KS2)

Children can make a self-referral by noting down what's on their mind; staff then arrange a time to meet.

Worry Monster (EYFS/KS1)

Our youngest children can share a worry with the Worry Monster, giving staff a gentle way in to check how they're doing.

Typically, five to eight sessions are enough to work through difficulties in their early stages, reviewed and agreed with everyone involved. One-off drop-ins are also available for parents and children. Participation in this support is always optional, and meetings take place in private — notes are securely filed and never shared without permission, except where there's a safeguarding concern.

Pupil Wellbeing Champions

A group of children trained to help their peers with wellbeing, offering a friendly, non-judgemental ear alongside our adult support. Peer support like this helps reduce stigma around mental health and builds resilience — giving children someone relatable to turn to when they might not feel ready to speak to an adult.

Further support for families

We recommend Anna Freud, a charity that has supported children and young people's mental health for over 70 years, combining science with lived experience so that families get support designed around their needs.
