Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is additional government funding paid to schools, introduced in 2011 to help close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The Department for Education describes its purpose as:
"Address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals and their wealthier peers, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most."
— DfE, April 2012
Funding is allocated for pupils currently eligible for free school meals, those who have been eligible at any point in the last six years ("Ever 6"), children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of armed forces families.
