Year 1

Meet Year 1

Welcome to Year 1! This is a wonderful year of discovery, where children begin to build on the brilliant foundations laid in Reception and grow in confidence as independent learners. We are passionate about making learning exciting and meaningful, blending structured lessons with creative and hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and joy.

Across the year, children develop their reading, writing and mathematical skills alongside a wide range of subjects that help them make sense of the world around them. For a more detailed view of our truly broad and balanced curriculum, please visit our dedicated Curriculum page.

We firmly believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential, and we look forward to working closely with families throughout the year. Please keep an eye on ClassDojo, where we regularly share learning moments and celebrate your child's achievements with you directly.

Welcome to Year 1

The DfE blogsite published a blog for parents: Everything you need to know about phonics in schools. Parents may find this paper an interesting read.

The DfE has published a leaflet that parents may find useful - Phonics screening check: information for parents. This explores what phonics is and what the phonics screening check does. It makes clear how parents can help with reading at home.

Useful Information

  • Phonics Guidance
  • Publication: DfE parent information leaflets for all assessments in the academic year 2025 to 2026

Earlier this week, the DfE updated their parental informational leaflets which explain what parents need to know, what each assessment involves, when tests take place and how the results are shared and used for all the statutory assessments completed this academic year.
